E.ON, Dong Energy and Masdar Announce that Work on London Array is Under Way

The London Array consortium, Abu Dhabi’s Masdar, E.ON, Dong Energy on Monday announced that work is under way at the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

The three world-leading renewable energy companies formed a consortium in 2011 to combine their experience and expertise to build and develop the Array when a series of environmental studies in the outer Thames Estuary confirmed the area is a suitable wind farm site.

Sultan Al Jaber, the chief executive of Masdar, in a press release said “Abu Dhabi’s clean energy company seeks to be a global provider of renewable energy expertise and knowledge.” “Masdar contributes to developing projects which help provide energy security, minimize impact on the climate as well as bolster the UAE’s leading role in energy sector,” he added.

London Array be the world’s largest offshore wind farm when built. The scheme will be located around 20km from the Kent and Essex coasts in the outer Thames estuary.

The energy produced by the Array will help to reduce CO2 emissions by 1.4million tonnes a year.

The project could, eventually, provide enough power for a quarter of all London homes, saving 1.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

London Array is being built by Denmark’s DONG Energy, Germany’s E.ON and Abu Dhabi’s cleantech mega-fund, MASDAR.
