Germany to Construct 84 Power Generation Plants

German industry is planning to invest in construction and modernization of 84 large power generation plants.

The capacity of planned and installed projects is 42,000 megawatts with the total investment volume of more than EUR 60 billion. Some 69 plants out of the 84 projects are undergoing permitting process. The remaining 15 projects are still in the planning stages. All of these construction projects will be carried out together by public utilities, large energy companies, various associations and private investors. In addition, there are plenty of small, local projects that are implemented in particular by the public utilities and are not included in this list.

BDEW said that from the total of 84 units, 23 are large offshore wind farms, 10 are pumped-storage power plants, 29 gas power plants and 17 coal-fired power plants.

The increased involvement in offshore wind and pumped storage is a positive signal that the industry is investing in the energy supply of the future.”

But this cannot hide the fact that there are obstacles not just for renewable power but also coal and gas-to-power projects,” said Hildegard Mueller, BDEW’s managing director.

By 2022, Germany aims to replace nuclear reactors with renewable energy, such as solar and wind.
