Maersk Oil: 40 Years of Oil Production

Maersk Oil 40 Years of Oil Production

4 July 2012 marked Maersk Oil’s 40 years’ anniversary as oil producing company and the launch of a book charting the history of the company through anecdotes of current and former employees. All employees will receive a copy of the new book.

In the book Maersk Oil – under the surface, 15 former and current employees give their personal take on how Maersk Oil developed from a company rooted in Denmark to a global player recognised for its success with challenging oil and gas fields.

Danish journalist and author Frank Esmann weaves together the touching, exciting and often funny stories from top management to frontline staff alike to paint a portrait of a growing company driven by a pioneering spirit.

Amongst the major milestones of Maersk Oil, such as negotiations with the Danish state, the start of operations in Qatar or the acquisition of its UK business, Esmann finds space for anecdotes about crocodiles in Indonesia, strawberries in cream on a windy platform and tricky Kazakh officials.

“Maersk Oil is growing fast, last year we welcomed 700 new colleagues. We need all these new colleagues to help us deliver on our future projects. But the risk is that in the process we forget about our heritage, our company culture and our A.P. Moller – Maersk roots. The purpose of the book is to remind people about Maersk Oil’s history, what the company was founded on, our company culture and values,” said Maersk Oil Global Head of Communications, Thomas Grøndorf.

“We wanted our former and current employees to tell the story of Maersk Oil – we wanted them to talk about the company’s milestones through their own experiences and anecdotes. So, we do not claim that the book tells the full story of Maersk Oil or presents an objective history. But we hope people will still enjoy reading it,” said Grøndorf.

The book is available in an e-version. Click here to download in English or in Danish.
