The role

You will be part of a a diverse and multidisciplinary development team of four to eight development engineers. In consultation with other R&D engineers, you will provide expert technical advice related to electrical and electronic system integration, especially regarding the implementation and integration of new technologies.

A development engineer is eager to understand and solve complex problems and is naturally curious to learn new ways of working. As such, you will collaborate with the Research teams to initiate research projects, supporting the implementation of new technologies in existing and conceptual ship designs while ensuring the proper application of fundamental principles of relevant technologies.

Close collaboration with relevant stakeholders within and outside the Damen group, such as Design & Proposal, Engineering, Services, Production, and Damen Clients and suppliers, is part of your daily work.

Key accountabilities

In the role of Development Engineer, you will apply your knowledge of automation and system integration to provide insights and contribute to the further development of Damen's product range.

In this role you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the implementation of suitable electrical engineering principles in ship designs. You will offer consultative technical advice to business units, guiding them on product functionality, performance, and quality related to automation and system integration. This expertise is gaining importance within the maritime industry due to the rapid adoption of more sustainable energy systems and a higher demand for automated or autonomous systems. In the Development team we’re supporting the divisions to drive the development of the specifications, draft test strategies and test plans, carry out SIL/HIL tests of system parts and modules and finally support in the actual integration and acceptance trials.

You will also travel to visit shipyards to assist in commissioning and perform yard and sea trials. As a development engineer you will actually go on-board and check if your calculations were correct and use this to build experience and to maintain a hands-on approach.

These responsibilities highlight how important your role is in advancing Damen's technological push and pull, contributing to the dynamic and forward-thinking attitude of the Research & Development Department.

Skills & experience

To excel in the role of Development Engineer and to fit our team of professionals you preferably possess:

· Master degree in applied technology such as Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering, Systems & control or equivalent or 5+ years’ experience as Systems Engineer

· Relevant working experience is considered advantageous, but is not required.

· A basic understanding of (MB)SE principles to support the ability to design, specify, validate and implement electromechanical systems, interfaces and controls.

· The ability to collaborate effectively with specialists from diverse fields, including mechanics, hydromechanics, and data science.

· An independent and flexible attitude.

· A high level of proficiency in English, both verbally and in writing.

· These qualifications will not only ensure success in providing expert technical advice but also contribute to the collaborative and innovative culture within Damen's Research & Development Department.
